Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP)

Description:

Due to the relatively unstable nature of organic peroxides a loss of quality can be detected over a period of time. To minimize the loss of quality, we recommend a maximum storage temperature (Ts max.) for each organic peroxide product. For MEKP Ts max.= 250C
When stored under the recommended storage conditions, will remain within the limit for a period of at least three months after delivery.

APPLICATIONS

  • Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) is used for the curing of unsaturated polyster resins in the presence of cobalt octoate accelerator at room and elevated temperatures.

  • For room temperature application it is necessary to use MEKP togetherwith a cobalt accelerator (e.g.Accelerator).

  • This catalyst gives much faster gel time required for GRP pipe manufacturing.

SAFETY AND HANDLING

  • Keep containers tightly closed. Store and handle MEKP in a dry wellventilated place away from source of heat or ignition and direct sunlight.

  • Avoid contact with reducing agents (e.g.amines), acids, alkalis and Heavy metal compounds (e.g.accelerators, driers and metal soaps)

SOLUBILITY

  • Slightly soluble in water and organic solvents

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • Specific Gravity : 1.14 to 1.18

  • Viscosity, 200C : 24 mPa.s

VAPOUR PRESSURE VAPOUR DENSITY: >1UNKNOWN

  • Flash Point : 77°C

  • Shelf life : 3 months @ 25°C

CURE CHARACTERISTICS

  • In a high reactive standard orthophthalic resin in combination with (= 1% cobalt) the following application characteristics were determined:

  • Gel times at 200C

  • 2 % MEKP + 0.5% Accelerator 13 minutes

  • 2 % MEKP + 1.0% Accelerator 8 minutes

  • Accelerators should be first added to the resin as direct contact of MEKP with accelerators may cause explosion.

  • A thorough mixing of resin and accelerator is recommended before addition of MEKP for obtaining best results.

  • Organic peroxides are thermally unstable substances, which may undergo self-accelerating decomposition.

  • The lowest temperature at which self-accelerating decomposition of a substance in the original packaging may occur is the Self Acceleratin Decompositi- on Temperature (SADT).

  • The SADT is determined on the basis of the Heat Accumulation Storage Test.

  • Emergency temperature(Tem) : 550CFor MEKP SADT : 600C
